Watch out, it's Supranet! The combination of the internet with mobile
commerce is producing an all embracing Supranet, reports Pat Sweet. |

One of the hallmarks of the end of the last century was the inexorable rise of the internet. From its origins as a computer network designed to be used by a select few with the necessary technical expertise, it has grown to become a mass communication medium for millions of people around the globe. Where previously they would have picked up the phone to deliver their message, people from all walks of life are now quite likely to send an e-mail. The tremendous enthusiasm for the internet demonstrated by both consumers and business users has been a driving force behind the meteoric growth in e-business. And now, as new technologies and especially wireless connections start to take hold, so the stage is set for the arrival of mobile versions of e-commerce. GartnerGroup suggests the impact of wireless data communications will be enormous, as next-generation wireless phones and connected personal digital assistants (PDAs) will support both data and voice communications. It estimates that the number of such devices connected to the internet will outstrip the number of connected PCs by 2003. More... |
