As anyone who has travelled on a train recently will testify, using a mobile phone to keep in touch whilst on the move has become a commonplace. The take-up of mobile voice technology has soared in the past couple of years, and looks set to carry on growing. But there will be an equally dramatic rise in the number of people using mobile data technology to add text, images and internet connectivity to their existing voice capability. There is no doubt that the volume of mobile data communications is growing very substantially. A key factor in this is market driven - mobile customers want to be more efficient when they are working away from base. Whilst voice messages play a part in this, adding data opens up a wealth of new opportunities. We are seeing a growing number of mobile applications based on a variety of technologies, including satellite, public mobile radio, and cellular. And whereas traditionally such applications tended to be tailored to meet the requirements of a specific vertical market sector, we are now seeing the increasing emergence of applications which are aimed at a horizontal market.
