While the term 'e-communications' evokes images of all manner of electronic communication, digital communication systems in particular are 'e-volving' at unprecedented rates. This is driven by the explosive growth in the use of 'pervasive communication devices' which continues unabated around the world. Mobile phones, palmtops or personal data assistants (PDAs), personal organisers, pagers and interactive television are all contributing to an exponentially growing e-communications marketplace, the size of which can really only be estimated. This exploding marketplace wraps in a services continuum from the traditional telecommunications operator through the now classic Internet Service Provider (ISP) all the way to the new second-generation application services provider (2G ASP). End of the beginning As network information services demanded by consumers continue to evolve from static text-based content to interactive, streaming, real-time audio and video, so will the capabilities of underlying communication networks needed for their delivery.
