E-hangover?

Cliff Leach of Lorien Consulting sees a maturing infrastructure contributing to a more sober view of e-business.

The explosion of commercial interest in the internet reflects the belief that it offers novel opportunities which can be exploited for profit.

The hyperbole surrounding the potential of this technology clearly ran out of control. As a result the dotcom revolution is now having to rapidly return investor and customer expectations to more realistic levels. This article will try to assess, dispassionately, what opportunities really exist. It will also try to clarify how this realignment of expectations will affect consultants attempting to add value in the IT marketplace.

The first round of the e-party is over and a sense of realism is dawning on the revellers, so what opportunities are left? There is no doubt that more ‘New Economy’ companies will fail; but many old economy companies will continue to pursue the e-business plans they have started. This will mean that the skills shortage in networking and systems integration for e-business will persist for a number of years. More significantly, the e-caution that has spread up the management pyramid will mean that e-security will become one of the crucial drivers limiting the roll-out of e-business solutions.
