Modern times Ron Mackintosh of Differentis calls
for a fresh management approach to a new breed of IT project after the
overblown efforts of the nineties. |

Lessons must be learned from the poor management of the mammoth IT projects of the nineties. There is a clear need for a new approach to how IT initiatives are conducted within an organisation. The organisation and management of finite resources within the IT function is becoming an increasingly complex task. In the aftermath of the dotcom bubble, IT departments have been faced with the growing need to back initiatives that are going to deliver real value to the organisation. Many IT projects have been dropped and others have been scrutinised far more closely than they would have been previously. Timelines for delivering return on investment (ROI) are also being set more rigidly. How can IT services departments develop, given the pace of change in both technology and the business climate in general? There is no doubt that the pressure is on. This is a changing era and the raised stakes necessitate a more pragmatic and dynamic approach to the management of IT initiatives. |
