Of bandwidth and box-count Brian Spiegelhalter of BT Ignite
looks ahead to next-generation networking. |

|
In this feature, I aim to provide a quick overview of some of the important emerging technologies in the various fixed network segments. That means covering the access, core transport, data transport, multimedia services over IP and network segments. The networks that now span Europe are at the centre of a revolution which sees the convergence of advanced physics, superhuman feats of engineering and project management, and market forces in their purest form. The next-generation networking technologies inspire awe for the outstanding scientific achievements being made every day in research and development labs across the world. But they must also be viewed from the point of view of a hard-headed business man closely in touch with the realities of what clients really want. In the present financial environment, with depressed telecoms stock prices and high levels of debt, there are significant capital investment constraints which mean that upfront cost needs to be minimised and early payback is sought. Under these conditions, time to market with products enabled by new technologies is critical. |
