 Collaborative Supply Chain   Expert Opinion

Process of collaboration

Kevin Pendlebury of Logica outlines current thinking on the ways and means of collaboration between business partners – and between consultants and clients.

I was working in the supply chain in the days of ‘tightly-coupled logistics’, when the new thing was to forge a partnership with supply chain players and use electronic data interchange (EDI) to make one big chain of ‘information’.

Of course, it largely failed because the technology to support the processes was not in place.

In addition, we had omitted to appreciate the difference between information and data which the EDI messages held. Having the data did not (and does not) actually guarantee that we could do anything with it.

We also found that there was a lack of genuine integration, and since everything was ‘hand-crafted’ in IT, we weren’t as successful as we would have liked.

Those were valuable lessons. The goal too was always worthwhile. With the advent of new technologies, the rise of CPFR (collaborative planning, forecasting and replenishment) is now a serious possibility and the old dream of closely matched supply chains is coming of age.
