The phrase ‘knowledge is power’ has become a convenient soundbite for everyone from the Prime Minister to software vendors such as IBM. The question of just how to manage that knowledge in order to extract maximum value from it is widely held to be one of the most critical issues currently facing many organisations, but surprisingly few have shown themselves able to translate the rhetoric into a practical reality.
At the last general election, Tony Blair stressed his party’s desire to transform the UK to become a leading ‘information economy’, stating that “our success depends on how well we exploit our most valuable assets – our knowledge, skills and creativity”.
