At the end of World War II, W Edwards Deming developed ‘14 points’ for the transformation of American industry from a domestic power to an international player, particularly in regard to trade with Japan. Although Deming’s ‘System of Profound Knowledge’ was created long before our reliance on computer technology, his principles are even more significant in relation to automated manufacturing than to the business conditions of the 1940s when they were introduced – begging the question: “Can Deming’s principles be automated? Will they be revived as we face a possible wartime economy?”

As our implementation of data has evolved from data to information to knowledge to wisdom, manufacturing processes can implement automated continuous improvement in manufacturing and the distribution process.
