News of the demise of ERP (or whatever term is used) is exaggerated. While vendors and their implementation partners have moved away from using the term, their focus remains fixed within this profitable area. There is too much at stake to abandon it.

Strictly speaking, the ERP application market – in contrast with that of CRM – has been contracting for several years. This indicates a change in development emphasis rather than a declining market or outmoded product. Applications such as CRM, supply chain management (SCM) and B2B e-commerce are now integral elements of the new ‘extended ERP’ offering and have long since been assimilated by the main ERP vendors (see Figure 2).
