Decision making during the dotcom boom was led by the belief in ‘first-mover advantage’, which cast aside traditional concerns for a clear return on investment. That is no longer the case, given the current environment of technology-scepticism and a focus on cutting costs.

In these frugal times, companies are balancing medium-term investment with short-term survival. While cutting costs is certainly a focus, the smartest organisations are still looking to make continual improvement. But this isn’t by investing millions in new packaged hardware and software. It’s through housekeeping, optimising and pinpoint tactical investment.
