For another example, take web services – an area of great interest for 2002. Described by Gartner as “internet-accessible software components” web services will capture attention during 2002. Typically utilising SOAP, siloed departments and, in time, separate organisations can automatically seek and retrieve required information in a controlled and automated fashion.

“By making software components available in a web services model, enterprises can make agile use of custom software functions, each designed to perform and optimise a specific piece of the business process. By 2003, Gartner continues, “more than 40% of all internet-oriented interactions will leverage web components from multiple enterprises.”
