The story of the data warehousing and business intelligence market is probably best encapsulated as ‘one step forward, two steps back’. A year ago, the overwhelming view was that these technologies were just about to motor to the top of the corporate buying list. That prediction has now been replaced by widespread agreement that the market has, at best, stalled.
This kind of rollercoaster ride is nothing new. Back in the mid 1990s, data warehouse sales rocketed as organisations started to try and pull all their corporate data together in one giant repository where it could be interrogated using a variety of tools.
