Jim Irving: boundaries are not limited only to the data within a given report

Researchers at GartnerGroup define business intelligence as a user-centred process of exploring data, data relationships and trends, thereby helping to improve overall decision making. This involves an interactive process of accessing data and analysing it to draw conclusions, derive insights and communicate findings with the purpose of affecting positive change within an enterprise.

Jane Griffen, director of the analytical solutions practice at Arthur Andersen Business Consulting, gives a more succinct definition, saying business intelligence strategies “leverage knowledge to close the loop between information and action”.
