The growth of the ‘knowledge economy’ is fuelling a major increase in the number of small and start-up companies. But those that survive the early stages often struggle to get to grips with growth and change, not least because they lack the systems and processes of more established organisations.
Purchasing is often a key area of weakness, where small organisations can suffer if adequate controls are not put in place. Even if procurement is well managed, small players are often unable to take advantage of the economies of scale on goods and services enjoyed by large corporate buyers.
